Software Development/System Integration

The working group of Software Engineering/System Integration develops not only complex software systems for internal and external ultrasound research but also forms the bridge to the customer and user with the creation of application-specific systems.

In the field of software engineering this group develops software concepts and libraries for all ultrasound frequency ranges from low-frequency sonar to classical medical imaging, right up to high-frequency ultrasound microscopy. This means that we can take recourse to joint resources for use in diverse applications for the control of the ultrasound hardware, signal processing including parameter extraction, as well as visualization techniques for both 2D and 3D imaging and image processing. Our software components are used both in firmware and embedded software in measurements systems as well as in classical desktop applications, independently or networked, right up to mobile apps on smartphones and tablets. All of these systems are subject to the same high demands in terms of quality and reliability. We fulfil these by testing our core technologies, but also individual software systems that we develop in classical or agile development processes, both as medical products or in accordance with industrial requirements.

In the field of system integration we execute the application integration of all the individual components in complete systems. Here the compatibility and interoperability of different software components are ensured, usually in combination with the measurement electronics and mechanics (construction with additional actuators and sensors) and optimized to product maturity. Customer-specific software solutions are created for these applications and the complete systems are tested either according to medical regulations or industrial standards. Alongside classical medical imaging systems, we also integrated a wide range of systems for special applications for example in multimodal and hybrid imaging (parallel MR+US, US+optics such as optoacoustics) as well as functional imaging.

sorted by business area

Biomedical Ultrasound

Ultrafast Ultrasound Imaging

Ultrafast Ultrasound Imaging is a modern beamforming technique that offers new possibilities in the measurement and analysis of dynamic processes.

Based on massive parallel execution of adapted algorithms, ultrafast ultrasound imaging can be used in the development and tests of lots of new beamforming processes.

Biomedical Ultrasound

3D/4D Ultrasound Imaging

Volumetric ultrasound imaging is used for imaging and analysis of complex anatomy not only in cardiac applications. We offer high end volumetric ultrasound scanning from classical position tracked slice acquisition followed by 3d reconstruction, mechanically scanning prenatal imaging transducers to modern matrix array usage for real time (4d) volumetric imaging.

Biomedical Ultrasound

Development of Medical Devices

The development and certification of our own ultrasound core technologies is done according the established processes for development, documentation and certification in compliance with the Medical Device Directive, tested by notified bodies.

We offer the overall product development as well as individual tests of single components.

Biomedical Ultrasound

Customer Specific Device Integration

The integration of ultrasound devices into an overall system setup includes the planning and handling of all types of active and passive third-party components.

We analyze the general system requirements, plan and perform the integration of all components and test the functionality and conformity of the overall setup in certified labs.

Biomedical Ultrasound

Mobile Ultrasound Systems

The combination of mobile ultrasound systems with current generations of smartphones and tablet computer allows us to move computations from ultrasound device hardware to these mobile devices to reduce hardware resources.

Every generation of new mobile devices results directly in a gain in processing power for the overall mobile devices they are integrated.

Biomedical Ultrasound

Open Interfaces

The access to open interfaces to control an ultrasound device and access to unprocessed data as well as processed and image data is a crucial requirement for devices to be used in research and OEM development. Based on the open programmability of signal generation and data access in the whole signal/image processing chain, the development of new applications and algorithms can be done.

Biomedical Ultrasound

Parameter Extraction for Analysis and Processing

The analysis of ultrasound measurement data is the basis for advanced imaging techniques that offer for example the quantification of tissue specific properties.

Based on radio frequent ultrasound data of our own beamformer system we can process much more data to extract relevant features compared to image-based analysis and feature extraction.

Biomedical Ultrasound

Maschine Learning

The usage of machine learning being part of artificial intelligence techniques allows the analysis of ultrasound data that can hardly be handled anymore by traditional signal processing approaches.

Neural networks for example have proven to help to improve accuracy for feature extraction and diagnostics.

Technical Ultrasound

Imaging in Nodestructive Testing

Image based nondestructive testing relies on different types of transmit and receive beamforming combined with extensive processing and analysis software. Techniques used include for example 2d imaging of pulse echo measurements, synthetic aperture imaging, tomographic imaging using transmission measurements as well as 3d/4d imaging using matrix array ultrasound transducers.

Technical Ultrasound

Certified Measurement Technology

The development and certification of our own ultrasound core technologies is done according the established processes for development, documentation and certification in compliance with the applicable standards, tested by notified bodies.

Sonar

Sonar Imaging

The visualization of sonar measurement data usually suffers from extensive artifacts caused by the use of comparatively small transducers compared to the large imaging areas covered.

Our transfer of modern ultrasound beamforming approaches from medical imaging and nondestructive testing add to existing sonar imaging technologies to enable new generation imaging devices with superior performance.

Sonar

Processing and Visualization

Beside the signal processing of the high-resolution sonar measurement data of our systems the fusion with other data sources like GPS position data or additional image acquisition systems is essential for advanced digital cartography.

We offer interfaces for our technologies to be integrated into third party tools for adapted visualization and processing.
